postpone. So all the dates on our showpage are now happening.

Toronto, ON – Fontana North and Talk’s Cheap Management regret to announce the cancellation of Grady’s Canadian tour and are supportive of their decision to cancel the tour dates during this difficult time.

Drummer Billy “Thunderball” Maddox leaves Grady due to a pre-existing health condition, which has culminated in his decision to avoid further stresses gained from life on the road. Due to the overwhelming care and respect Gordie Johnson and Big Ben Richardson have for their fans, and the love and admiration they have for Billy; Grady have decided to take the time to find a drummer who can invoke the same intensity and “giv’r attitude” that Billy gave day in and day out. “To find a drummer that can dance on the double kick pedal and sweat blood for us 90 minutes a night, night after night like Billy did, is going to be a tall order, he will be sorely missed on the road, but he remains part of the Grady Family” states Gordie.

Statement from Billy Maddox:

Dear Grady Fans,
It is with much regret that I end my drumming duties with Grady. This is due to a medical condition that, while not life threatening, is forcing me to curtail all touring at this time. The decision to leave has not been an easy one and I'm truly sorry I won't be seeing ya'll on the road. Playing with Grady has been an honor and I appreciate the way you, our fans, have embraced me.

Sincerely,
Billy Maddox

The band’s new single “You’re What’s Happening Baby” is being delivered to radio this week and the video for the song is in pre-production and will be shot by award winning director Stephen Scott. The band does have tentative plans to reschedule the tour for November.
Look for the new CD “A Cup of Cold Poison” in stores now!

Ben’s Log Feb 5, 2007: Going to Norway

Monday, Jan 8: The plane is landing in Austin. It’s 11:30PM, the plane is two hours late. I’m just getting back from a weekend in Western Canada with Alejandro Escovedo. By the time the plane has landed, waited around for my baggage and got in a taxi home, it is 1AM. Home sweet home. The only problem being that I have a flight to Toronto at 6:30AM. This means that I need to be at the airport by 5AM. There is really nothing worse than arriving home, only to start packing immediately.

I’m on my way to Toronto to pick up some guitars and a two man/woman crew and then drive to Montreal where we are scheduled to play a benefit concert for End Poverty Now at Café Campus. The flight to Toronto is okay, and after renting a vehicle and picking up guitars, Keith our guitar tech, and Debbie our soundperson, we set off for the 6 hour drive to Montreal around 5PM. We arrive in Montreal about 10:30PM. Gordie and Billy have already flown in, and are both busy for the night. So me, Keith and Debbie check in to the hotel quickly and then boot over to Schwartz’s deli for the best smoked meat sandwiches in the world. After that we find a pub and sit around till three AM telling lies (me and Keith go back twenty years, so we tell a lot of lies).

Wednesday Jan 10: I get up late feeling a little worse for wear. Luckily we don’t have to load in and soundcheck till 4PM. Everything runs smoothly, and by 11:30PM we’re onstage doing our best to eradicate world hunger. Had a good time after the show talking to Tammy and a bunch of other Grady chatboard members. After the show, we get back in the minivan and drive back to Toronto, drop off the guitars, and catch a nap before heading out to the airport to catch my 5PM flight back to Austin. Of course, the plane is two hours late, and the plane lands at 1AM. I get home at 2AM and guess what? Start packing for a week in Norway as I have to be at the airport by 11:30AM.

Friday Jan 12: I meet Gordie and Billy at the airport and we get on the first of three planes taking us to Oslo, Norway

Saturday Jan 13: The plane arrives in Oslo at 11:30AM. Luckily all our gear arrives as well and we are picked up by our promoter Kai. He already has a trailer filled with rental equipment (amplifiers and drums). By the time we get into town it is 2PM and we head straight over to our first show of the day. It’s a small club called Mono in downtown Oslo. As they are not quite ready for us, we grab our suitcases and walk two blocks to the hotel. Check in quickly and then back to the club to soundcheck. As we’re dragging all the equipment in, the bartender Marianne is helping us carry it. I told her that this was the first time a bartender had ever moved our equipment. She just laughed. Marianne turned out to be a wonderful woman who went out of her way to show us around and keep us attuned to whatever was going on. Our show is scheduled for 6PM. By five Gordie is ensconced in the upstairs dressing room doing the first interview of the trip, and I’m down in the bar having a beer with Dag the head of our record company Voices of Wonder. Also Tom, our friend who brought us over for the Down on The Farm festival last summer shows up with his two sons, Edward and KG. By 6PM the place is packed, and we play for about an hour. People seem to be digging it. After the show, Kai sidles over and tells me that we now have another gig on Tuesday, yee haa. Then it’s off to the next load in at a place called Gamla. Gamla is apparently one of the oldest buildings in Oslo. Three hundred years ago it was a stable. It was great. About a hundred and fifty people show up to see us, and we rock again. We also meet Anders, a noted Norwegian journalist who saw us at The Continental Club in Austin during South By Southwest. He tells us that he’s a big fan, and then goes on to prove it by giving us a 5 out of 6 star review in The Dagbladet, Norway biggest daily paper. Even though we’re exausted, myself, Gordie, Kai and Tom head back over to Mono for some post show celebratory drinks. Gordie even has a beer. I deke out around 3AM.

Sunday Jan14: Luckily a day off (as it turns out, our only day off) I sleep for about 16 hours.

Monday Jan 15: Afternoon meeting with the record company. Voices of Wonder is the label that is known for releasing Norwegian Black Metal. After meeting the staff and a bunch of handshaking, we walk out of there with a whole pile of Metal CD’s. Our gig tonight is at the Palace Grill. The Palace Grill is basically a pub attached to a highclass dining establishment. When they have bands, they just move some tables out of the corner, and presto… instant bandstand. The place was packed by the time we went on, and again everybody seemed to love it. Anders showed up again with some friends. Even though we were playing at our usual thunderous volume in a pretty enclosed space, they ate it up. After the show, Kai sidled up to me and said, we’ve got another gig on Wednesday now. Awesome, we were now fully booked for the rest of our trip. We started joking that most of the shows were within a five minute
walk of the hotel and that we weren’t taking any more gigs that weren’t within walking distance. We even thought of changing our name to “The Walking Grady’s”.

Around about this time, we started hearing that Austin was in the grip of an ice storm, and that the whole city was shut down for 3 days. It was kinda funny to be in Norway, where they are having they’re warmest winter ever. It hadn’t even snowed yet and was quite warm.

Tuesday Jan 16: Played at Amplifier, a small basement rock club with the best sound system yet.

Wednesday Jan 17: Played at The Scuba Bar. This was definitely a last minute show. When we arrived, we found it to be a tiny upstairs bar with a band hosting a blues jam. The stage was so small that we wouldn’t have been able to even fit our drumkit on it. We ended up using the other bands gear and did a 45 minute set to about 40 people. Fun.

Thursday Jan 18: The gig was called Dattera de Hagen, which means Hagens daughter. It was upstairs too, but had a decent stage and soundsystem. We were sharing the night with a reggae DJ. The place was packed and had another awesome show

Friday Jan 19: Got up early and drove an hour out of town at 8:30AM to do Tom’s radio show at NRK. We did a stripped down recording of seven songs for future broadcast, then drove another hour to Halden were we had played the Down On The Farm Festival. We played at Feelgood to about 250 people and had our wildest show in Norway to date (we ended up playing about two hours).

Saturday Jan 20: The next day woke to a snowstorm. We went for lunch with Tom and Kai to a lovely little restaurant that served great italian food. Gordie was in seventh heaven. It took about four hours to drive back to Oslo. We went straight to the club, Elm St to load in. This was our last show and people turned out on masse to wish us goodbye. Anders showed up again, and after the show we hung around and I actually celebrated with a couple of scotches.

Sunday Jan 21: Left for the airport at 9AM, arrived back in Austin at midnight… Slept for two days.
Going back in April.

January 2, 2007

Hey All:  Grady would like to wish everyone a Happy New Year. We’re hoping that 2007 will be a good year for us. As we speak we are awaiting the mastered final copy of our new CD tentatively titled “Cup of Cold Poison”  Hopefully it won’t be much  longer till the CD is commercially available. Thanks for all your patience.  It has taken awhile to get together, but good things come to those who wait, and we  are extremely happy with the way it turned  out. On to other news…  We’re glad to announce the European release of “YU So Shady?”.  It will feature an all new cover as well as include the video for “Woman Got My Devil” as part of an interactive computer CD. It will be released in Scandinavia on the Voices Music label.  Voices Music was formerly known as Voices of Wonder Records, home of Norwegian Black Metal.  We will be visiting Oslo, Norway on Jan 13  through Jan 21 and playing assorted live showcase and press dates TBA (watch the shows page). In the rest of Continental Europe, it will be released on the Textone Label with distribution through Cargo Records.  Needless to say we are anticipating touring Europe to be a priority in 2007.

The best part of 2006 for us was having Billy “Thunderball” Maddox join the band on drums.  He’s an awesome drummer and a great guy. With Billy fully on board now, we’re hoping to expand out into the rest of the US in 2007.  Thanks to those of you who’ve emailed the website and requested performances in all different areas of the country. We do get the emails and appreciate the feedback.  Keep em comin.

Also, big thanks to Gucci Little Piggy (Tam) for jumping onboard and helping out on the website and the MySpace page. She’s made a big difference and we sure do appreciate the help.

Upcoming shows include a benefit for End Poverty Now in Montreal at  Le Café Campus on Jan 10, Oslo, Norway assorted venues Jan 13-21,  Continental Club, Austin Feb 10, Red Eye Fly, Austin March 3, and  assorted dates TBA for South By Southwest March 14-18.

Y’all come back and see ole Grady sometime…..

Hey All:  GRADY had a great summer playing all kinds of shows.  From “The Keep Austin Weird Festival” and “Red White And Blues festival” in Austin, to “The London Balloon Fest”, “The Harvest Jazz And Blues Festival”, “It’s Your Festival”, “The Calgary Stampede”, and some great club dates in Canada.  The undoubted highlight of the summer was going to Halden, Norway to play “Down On The Farm Festival”.  Through this show it looks like we’ve secured a record label for Scandinavia.  Talks are also almost completed for distribution thoughout all the rest of Europe.  Thanks to Tom Skjeklesæther and Stageway for putting it all together. In August, we were back at Pedernales Studio (Willie Nelson’s place) to record our second CD. All the tracking has been completed and October is slated for mixing and finishing up.Ole Grady Johnson finished up production on the new Gov’t Mule CD “High And Mighty” which came out in mid August.  He’s also been working the knobs on releases by Clayton Bellamy, The Respectables, and Joel Plaskett among others, which should keep him busy till the new year. Thanks to all the folks who came out to see us and buy our CD’s and T-Shirts.  Keep supporting us and we’ll just keep coming back.

April 22, 2006

Greetings Y’all:  First off, we’d like to extend our apologies to anyone who came out to our show at Redrum in Austin on April 7. Unfortunately we were not able to play as Grady Johnson came down with an acute case of food poisoning at 9PM that night.  It was doubly frustrating, as Grady interrupted his production schedule with Gov’t Mule to fly in from New York especially to play that show.

The video for “Woman Got My Devil” is done and presently on light rotation on MuchMore Music. Produced by Michael Maxxis and directed by David Hogan, the video features Witchbaby from A & E’s Rollergirls, as well as a number of other Rollergirls in supporting roles. It was shot in Luck, Texas, an 1800’s western town owned by Willie Nelson,

FEBRUARY 23, 2006

Hey Everybody:

Well, it’s official. Chris “Whip” Layton has left GRADY. Unfortunately he had so many other projects going on, that he no longer had enough time to commit to GRADY on a full time basis. We wish him all the best with his future endeavours and remain good friends.

Our new fulltime drummer is Billy Maddox. Billy is well known as a member of Alien Love Child and Eric Johnson. He’s a badass!!! Make sure to come and check him out at our gig at The Continental on Friday February 24th.

With the change in drummers, we are now looking to go into the studio April/May to record a new CD. So stay tuned for more info on that.

On February 7th and 8th we shot a video for “Woman Got My Devil” out at Willie Nelson’s 1800’s western town in Luck, Texas. Produced by Michael Maxxis, it was directed by David Hogan. David has a video resume that is out of this world. Highlights are Melissa Etheridge, Cheryl Crow, Steve Miller, Bob Seger, Fishbone, Prince, Waylon Jennings, The Judds, Alabama, Kenny Rogers, Shania Twain, Chet Atkins and Mark Knofler, Ronnie Milsap, Bonnie Raiit, Shedaisy, k.d.lang w/ Loretta Lynn, Brenda Lee and Kitty Wells, Big and Rich, Gretchen Wilson, to name a few. Our star was WitchBaby from The Rhinestone Cowgirls with cameo appearances from some of the other Lonestar Rollergirls. We had an absolute blast making it, and are awaiting the rough cut as we speak. It should be complete by the beginning of March.

SXSW is coming up quick. GRADY will be showcasing on Sat/March 18th at 9:00PM at The Dirty Dog Bar on 6th Street.

Around Austin we’ll be teaming up with our buddies in Broken Teeth to put on a series of shows at Redrum, The Backroom, Antones and The Red Eye Fly. So keep an eye on the shows page for those.

Our sympathies and best wishes go out to our brothers in Honky who apparently had a run in with some redneck cops in Florida a couple of days ago. Safe travels boys…

Come back an see ole GRADY some time

January 31, 2006

Hey Everybody: On Feb 7-9 (Tues-Thurs) GRADY will be shooting a video for “Woman Got My Devil”. If you’re from or around the Austin area we are looking for volunteers and a few other things.

Come back and see ole Grady sometime

January 18, 2005

Hey Everybody: We hope y’all had a Happy Holiday Season. We sure did. The trip to Maui was unbelievable and it seemed like everyone there had a great time. We had a blast with The Arc Angels. We’d like to thank KLBJ (Jeff, Dale, Bob, Charlie and Angela), Don Kurtz and Mark Proct for putting it altogether and supporting GRADY throughout 2005.

We were recently in the studio and cut some more tracks that are sounding pretty rippin.

Ole Grady Johnson will have his producers hat on throughout January producing the new CD for Government Mule. Look for that release in the spring.

We’ve got some dates coming up in February, but just before that we’ll be providing the music after The Ice Bats game on Jan 28.

GRADY will be shooting a video for Woman Got My Devil in early February with a tentative release date as a single in Canada at the beginning of March, so look out for some new Canadian tour dates.

The South By Southwest Music Conference is slated for March 15-19, 2006. We’ll let you know when our showcase date is as soon as it’s confirmed.

Don’t forget to vote for GRADY at the Austin Chronicle Music Awards. You can vote HERE. Vote now as the poll closes on January 26.

July 10, 2005

Hello again everyone: It’s definitely been a couple of busy months for Grady. As I write this, we’re sitting in a Calgary hotel getting ready to do our next gig at Coyotes tonight. Our CD Y.U. So Shady has been out a couple of months now in Canada, and things seem to be going very well. We’ve been blown away at the reaction from both Big Sugar fans and new converts. A big thank you to all who’ve been supporting us.

Hammer in My Hand is still on the singles chart and Warner Canada is looking at what the next single is going to be. If any of you have opinions on which song should go to radio next, we’d love to hear your feedback. Please let us know by dropping us an email at gradyaustin@sbcglobal.net

We also want to thank all the people who’ve written us with their comments. We do see all the emails that come in. Unfortunately we don’t have time to respond to them all, although we do try.

Right now we’re on tour in western and central Canada. At the end of July, we will be back in Ontario and Quebec. We’re still trying to work out getting to the east coast and the west coast, so stay tuned for more dates to be announced in September/October.

On the Austin front, we did a great gig at Carlo’s and Charlie’s a couple of weeks ago opening up for the Arc Angels. Also got to see Vallejo on that show. Pretty badass.

We’ll be back in Austin soon at Antones July 20th for their 30th anniversary celebrations. Scott Biram will be on that show with us. We’re also doing a show with Kenny Wayne Shepard at The Pier on July 23. The Pier is a great venue right on Lake Travis. August 5 we’ll be back at our old stomping grounds The Continental with our pals Honky, definitely not a show to miss. Then in September we’ll be part of the Austin City Limits Music Festival. The ACL fest runs Sept 26 thru Sept 28 and attracts 65,000 people a day. Stay tuned for details on our ACL show.

For complete listings visit our Shows page.

Thanks for all the support and feel free to hassle your local radio station to play more Grady.
Come back and see ole Grady sometime

May 12, 2005

Yo Everybody: Things are coming together on the Canadian front We’re now able to announce the first leg of our Canadian Tour which should take us through Ontario. We will definitely be doing the east and the west a little later in the summer so stay tuned for more dates to be announced soon.
We’re slowly gaining ground on the rock chart and are at No 18 this week. Feel free to badger your local radio station into playing us more.
The CD “Grady Y.U So Shady” is in stores on May 17th on Warner Canada. Thanks to Steve Blair for “gittin it”.

On the Austin front we’re back at The Continental on May 14 w/ the esteemed Scott Biram, the youngest dirty old bluesman I know. On Thursday May 19 we’re doing a special show with our pals Amplified Heat at Room 710 on Red River. It’s going to be a bit of a birthday celebration for both Gordie and Gian of Amplified Heat. The Heat are on about 11PM with us playing after them around 12:30AM. If you’ve never seen Amplified Heat, these boys have energy in spades. Think Blue Cheer meets Pantera.

Check out the new dates on the Shows Page. Come back an see ole Grady sometime

April 9, 2005

Hey Everybody: The good news… our CD “Y.U. So Shady” is scheduled for release in Canada May 17 on the Warner Canada label. The bad news is… there is no bad news. Our single “Hammer In My Hand” is getting played on radio stations across Canada. Right now we’re No 31 on the Rock Chart. If you live in Canada, please call or email your local favorite rock station to request “Hammer In My Hand”. We hope to be doing a full scale Canadian tour this summer starting sometime in June. Stay tuned for confirmed dates.

It has come to our attention that there is another band in Toronto calling themselves Grady. Until we resolve this situation, be advised that unless it is officially confirmed on this website, there are no Canadian appearances scheduled for us at this time. So if you see Grady advertised in Toronto, it ain’t us. Sorry for any confusion.

On the local front, We’ve had a busy few weeks. We opened two shows for the Arc Angels at Stubbs that was recorded and videotaped for a possible future DVD release. According to the camera guys it looked and sounded great.
Last weekend we played the Kontinentals Hotrod Custom show out at Festival Beach. Bill Kirchen, Gary Clark Jr, Redd Volkaert, Grady, Junior Brown and 500 Custom pre 63 cars and Hotrods. Apparently James Hetfield of Metallica watched our whole set. Hope he liked it. It was a beautiful afternoon, and the partying carried on all night on South Congress where we got to see some great entertainment like Honky, The Red Light Burlesque and Southern Comfort On The Skids.
We also got a last minute booking at Stubbs (inside) Friday April 15. Come down and support us if you can.

As you’ll see on the Homepage of the site, Grady and the Arc Angels will be going to Hawaii Dec 12-19 for a little holiday and some shows sponsored by KLBJ. Packages are available via the link on the Homepage.

We recently moved the Big Sugar website to our own server and got the message board back up and running. We also added a trader board to the Big Sugar website.
Our policy on trading is that we don’t mind fans trading live shows that they have recorded as long as no one is doing it for profit.
We will be updating the chat board soon so that it is both Grady and Big Sugar.
Thanks to the chataholics for their patience as we implement these changes.

Don’t forget about the Stubbs show. Come back and see ole Grady sometime….

March 23, 2005

Hey Everybody: Well it’s been a crazy three weeks. We went up to Canada and did eight dates as part of the Extreme Music Series. We played 4 dates in Ontario including a great show at The Opera House in Toronto as part of Canadian Music Week, then moved on to Winnipeg, Calgary, Edmonton and Burnaby (Vancouver). Thanks to all the fans who came out and supported us. Also thanks to all the radio programmers who played and are still playing Hammer In My Hand. It was great to get back to Canada.
Then with no sleep we flew back to Austin for a couple of shows at The Continental (w/ Doyle Bramhall Sr) and at Antones (w/ Silvertide and Oliver Black)
Then onto South By Southwest. We had a really good showcase at The Continental but the amazing news was winning Best New Band in The Austin Music Awards. Thanks again to all the people who voted for us. We also placed in a great many categories.
Coming up, we’ve got two shows with The Arc Angels March 25-26 at Stubbs and then the Kontinentals Hot Rod Show at Festival Beach on April 2 with a slew of other acts including Redd Volkaert and Junior Brown.
Come down and see ole Grady sometime...

Hey Everybody: Sorry about the confusion on posting the Canadian dates. We inadvertantly posted the Toronto show before it was on sale and had to pull the listing. Anyway, the Canadian dates are now posted and on sale. Thanks to Three Days Grace for inviting us to be part of their shows.
In other news, The Preying Lizard Music Ezine have declared Grady Best New Band and Best Album of 2004. Check it out at www.preyinglizardmusic.com
Stay tuned y'all

Thanks to all of you who came to our record release events in Austin last week. KLBJ has bumped up rotation of Hammer In My Hand and we had a great gig at Antones on Saturday incorporating a rear projection system which enabled us to project flaming backgrounds, logos and different Gradylike scenerios. Thanks to Mark Proct and Marco for putting it all together for us.
Also of note, our friends Canadian rock band THE TREWS will be joining us for a show right here in Austin at The Continental Tuesday, December 7. Should be a really good one as THE TREWS are a great band. Gordie produced their #1 Canadian CD "House of Ill Fame"

Stay tuned for more news...

Hey there everybody. Well we finally picked up the finished revised manufactured "Y.U. So Shady". It will be available starting today for sale at our gigs and at Waterloo Music and through their website at waterloorecords.com (see link on this site). To our Canadian friends, unfortunately it is still only available on import from Waterloo, but hopefully we should be getting Canadian distribution in the New Year.
The good news is that local radio station KLBJ has added "Hammer In My Hand" to their nighttime rotation. If you're from the Austin area and you'd like to hear more of it, you can call the request line at 512-390-5525 to request it, or request it online by clicking HERE!
Thanks for supporting us and we hope you like the record as much as we do, and don't forget we'll be at the Sixth St Pecan Fest tomorrow night (Sat, Sept 25) at 9PM on the KLBJ stage

Hello everybody: Well we finally have the album remixed and remastered. We took three songs off and put two songs on. We've also given it a whole new cover although it's still called "Y.U. So Shady". We're really happy with the way it sounds now and hope that you all like it. We've posted two songs on the site for you to listen to.
We should have the new pressing in a couple of weeks and we'll keep you posted as soon as we get it as to where you can find it. Hope everyone is having a great summer.
Stay tuned
